What are Mastery Quizzes?

As new sets come out, there are new mechanics, revised rules, and updates to policy. When you’re tested for your certification level, you’re not able to be tested on future rules and policy. These updates demonstrate that you’ve kept up with the changes to rules and policy as the game continues to evolve.

Furthermore, the lessons and exams are ways to catch up with those changes and updates, with all of the most important elements, consolidated into a few lessons, along with examples and explanations.

Are Mastery Quizzes Mandatory?

Nope! They are not required to maintain your certification or be staffed for events. However, we’re working on expanding judges' profiles pages, to include information such as your most recent exam passed, as well as recent event history.

Having a recent Mastery Quiz on your profile will show to Tournament Organizers who look for it that you are actively engaged in continuing your understanding of the game and improving your personal skill set. It also can demonstrate to other judges if you’re seeking mentorship that same work.

Mastery Quizzes can also be used as small practice exams - as low stakes exams, they can let you get used to the formatting and style of questions that are used on certification exams.

What’s On Mastery Quizzes?

Mastery Quizzes will cover most of the information taught in the update lessons. Because the lessons and quizzes are not level restricted, these questions have a broader range of difficulty, and so it’s possible that some your exam will have some questions that are at an Apprentice level, while others are Level Two or higher.

Mastery Quizzes will also have some questions that don’t follow the same format as certification exams - they include a number of True/False questions and other questions that may not have exactly four possible answers.

What’s the Structure of Mastery Quizzes?

Mastery Quizzes are ten questions, with an 80% passing score. There will be a mix of rules and policy, with the ratios dependent on the individual update and how much the rules and policies have changed with the set release.

The test has a seven-day cooldown, so if you don’t pass, you can re-take the exam relatively quickly. The test is also eligible to re-take, even if you do pass, on the same cooldown, so you can test yourself on a broader set of mechanics.

Lessons are released when the documents are published, but the exam is dependent on both rules and policy documents being available, and so one lesson may be released before the other, and well in advance of the exam.

Once the next set is released, the exam will be retired and the next set of exams will be released. Some questions may be repurposed to be used in the appropriate certification exams.
